By the way, why is “douche” such a great insult towards douchey men?
Have you wondered why one of the best insults towards men is the name of a feminine hygiene product? Is this just one more instance of female genitalia being used as an insult (such as with “p**sy”?)
I got curious about this, so I looked it up—and I got an answer from an excellent article by Maddie McClousky writing on Everyday Feminism: “Could Douchebag Be a Feminist Insult?”
It turns out that modern douche products were invented in the early 1900’s by the male executives of the Lysol corporation.
That’s right. I fact-checked this. (See this chilling article in Mother Jones, “When Women Used Lysol as Birth Control.”) In the 1910’s bunch of male executives got together and basically said, “we don’t like the way our women’s hoo-ha’s smell, so let’s convince them to disinfect their vaginas with our toilet bowl cleaner!”
This was a pure shame-based marketing play. Which is fucked up, because vaginas are self-cleaning. They're pretty much the only self-cleaning thing in the known universe.
So a bunch of men came together and said, “let’s shame a bunch of women in order to convince them to pay us a bunch of money to put toxic and dangerous chemicals deep inside them in order to clean their body part that is already self-cleaning.”
Thus, the word douchebag is a perfect insult for douchey men like those in power now, because these men, just like douche products, are up in your business, unnecessary, condescending to and controlling of women, and toxic.
Let’s say NO to doucheocracy, and put these ruling douchebag men in their place!
